There are some crazy people who enjoy running on cold dark winter evenings, and then there are others, who will only run between the months of April-August, when the sun is warm and stays in the sky later than 4pm. We know there is nothing worse than going for a run and the heavens opening, the rain so heavy your shoes become weights and running on the pavement feels like running on sand. For those who like to hang up their running shoes in the winter and don’t want to pay for the overpriced gym around the corner, we’ve thought of some easy indoor exercises which don’t require any gym equipment or a rain mac.

Toe taps (requires a step/bottom stair)

  1. Stand with your toes facing the step/stair
  2. Tap your right foot on top of the stair whilst your left remains on the ground
  3. Quickly alternate your feet adding a slight jump

Burpees

  1. Begin standing upright
  2. Squat down and place your hands on the floor
  3. Kick your feet back into a plank position
  4. Quickly jump your feet back to your hands
  5. Jump up and return to standing position

Downward dog toe taps and plank shoulder taps

Note: Try not to take a break between these two exercises!

  1. Begin in a downward dog position
  2. Reach with your right hand and touch your left toe, using your left to stay stable
  3. Repeat for each toe 10 times
  4. From downward dog swing forward into plank
  5. With your left hand still on the ground, use your right hand to touch your left shoulder.
  6. Repeat for each side 10 times

Mountain climbers

  1. In a push-up position, keeping your left leg straight, bring your right knee up under your hip
  2. Quickly reverse the position, moving your right back and bringing your left leg under your hip
  3. Alternate at a pace

Cycling

  1. Begin lying on your back with your knees up and your hands on your head
  2. Bring your right elbow to your left knee, at the same time lowering your right leg so it hovers above the ground
  3. Do the same with the opposite sides and repeat at a faster pace
